Feeney Case in Massachusetts Struck Down Bias in Veterans Preference
Massachusetts worker Helen Feeney challenged a veterans’ preference law she argued favored men. The Boston panel again struck down the law, finding discriminatory intent despite adverse impact, noting the form clearly biased against women. Feeney, once a clerk and personnel coordinator, had lower rankings due to male veterans with higher scores and has been unemployed since 1975.
