Bluesman Alger Texas Alexander to get historic marker
The Montgomery County Historical Commission plans a historical marker at the African American cemetery in Richards to honor Alger Texas Alexander, a pioneering Texas bluesman buried in Longstreet Cemetery. Born 1900, he recorded over 60 songs from 1927 to 1934 and influenced artists like Lightnin Hopkins and Lowell Fulson. The marker would be one of only two designated sites in the growing county, recognizing a figure largely neglected after his death 62 years ago this month.
