Condom tax break draws fire in Texas
A $160 million state sales tax exemption on over the counter medicines will include condoms under a 1999 law. Comptroller Rylander said the law lists prophylactics among exempt items. Bush aides say he did not want condoms exempt. Critics argue it promotes promiscuity while health advocates see public health benefits. Peggy Romberg supports the tax-free status, stressing disease prevention. Cathie Adams of the Eagle Forum condemns the move as contradicting teen sexual health messaging.
