Cider House Rules Bypasses Abortionist Opposition Ahead of Oscars
The Cider House Rules largely avoids anger from anti abortion groups despite depicting a character who supports a woman’s right to choose. The film, set in 1940s rural Maine, follows Homer Wells and Dr Wilbur Larch at an orphanage abortion mill and includes debates over abortion while receiving mixed reactions from groups like Movieguide, Planned Parenthood, and Legal Center for the Defense of Life. The movie earned best picture and six other Oscar nominations and has seen its box office rise to about 23 million, aided by Oscar buzz.
