Carbon dioxide emissions rise in 2000 in United States
The Energy Information Administration reports a 2.7 percent rise in US carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels in 2000, the largest annual increase since the mid-1990s, driven by economic growth, colder weather, and drought reducing hydroelectric power. The total reached 1,558 million metric tons, 41 million more than 1999.
