In Hartford over the weekend more than 80 direct descendants of Lyman Beecher gathered at Nook Farm for a reunion. The attendees ranged from 95-year-old Joseph K. Hooker to 8-month-old Anne Powers, with many descendants noted as doctors, engineers and educators. The gathering, organized by Joseph Van Why of the Stowe-Day Foundation, honors the Beecher lineage that includes Harriet Beecher Stowe and famed 19th century preacher Lyman Beecher known for temperance sermons and anti-Catholic sentiment.
