Program Gives Aid to Deaf Children and Families
Greenville programs support hearing impaired kids like two year old Ty Hubbard through home visits by Becky Spivy, a deaf education teacher. Ty's hearing aids, worn since last November, help him learn to listen and discriminate sounds. After age three he will join a pre kindergarten class at Houston Elementary with peers who have varying degrees of hearing loss.

Capt Rich Savko, former Reese Air Force Base 64th group commander, is named the new executive officer for the U S Air Force Thunderbirds. He beat five finalists from 113 volunteers after five days of intensive interviews at Nellis AFB. Savko will join the team Aug 25 for a Reese homecoming after a four year absence.

Texas weighs impact of high court ruling on blue law repeal
AUSTIN AP The Texas attorney general office will review a recent U S Supreme Court ruling on religious day off rights to see if it affects Texas legislation repealing the 1961 Blue Law that closed most stores on Sundays. The court barred forcing workers to take a religious day off. Texas lawmakers included provisions to shield Sunday work from affecting religious services. Loretta Hendley said a copy of the opinion is requested and no comment will be offered until then.

Prison chief will resign from Texas prison board
Robert Gunn of Wichita Falls said he will resign from the Texas prison board and back Republican Tom Loeffler if he runs for governor. Gunn, appointed in 1981 by Gov. Bill Clements, criticized Gov. Mark White for mixing prisons and politics and interfering in selecting a prison director after Raymond Procunier’s resignation. Gunn declined to specify when he will quit.
