Senate Democratic leader Mike Mansfield urged critics to drop MIRV worries and focus on stopping the Safeguard antiballistic missile system deployment. He commented on the Senate Armed Services Committee’s approval of a $794 million ABM authorization and projected how the debate might unfold on MIRV. Mansfield noted the Pentagon may be acting within the law while supporting suspending MIRV if a Russian moratorium is reached during arms talks.
