Singer Cathy Smith fights Canadian extradition to California
Cathy Evelyn Smith, former backup singer for Gordon Lightfoot, battles extradition to Los Angeles where she faces a second degree murder charge and 13 drug delivery counts in John Belushi's 1982 overdose death. The York County Court judge weighs reliance on written affidavits versus in person testimony. If successful, the hearing must be rescheduled. Smith, 35, was indicted after Belushi, 33, died of a cocaine and heroin mix. She surrendered on bail and faces Canadian law questions, while California argues felony murder applies if a dangerous drug is supplied and death results.
