Convention debate rises after committee backs busing plank
Continued from page one, the platform committee adopted a busing plank to desegregate schools and improve education. Wallace backers failed 78 to 16 to force a constitutional amendment banning busing. McGovern planks urged immediate withdrawal of U S forces from Indochina, defense cuts, and reduced European troop levels. Agnew condemned McGovern as retreating abroad and radical at home while labor leader Paul Jennings pledged union support if McGovern wins. Kennedy predicted McGovern’s nomination. Klein argued convention bias. A Tennessee judge refused to compel five Memphis delegates to obey state law and vote Wallace, citing conscience over legal compulsion.
