Banks React to Higher Costs with New Fees and Limits
Financial institutions including Bank of America and Central Savings Bank of Maryland hike fees on passbook accounts and add limits on withdrawals. Rising rates and regulatory shifts push costs up, prompting moves away from free services and toward fee-based checking, safe deposit charges, and reduced product variety. Small accounts face new charges while minors may be exempt. Depositors shift to high yield CDs and money markets as free services decline nationwide.
