Leonard Hearns clash fuels hype for Las Vegas unification
In Houston and Astrodome, Thomas Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard defeated Pablo Baez and Ayub Kalule respectively to retain belts and sharpen hype for a September welterweight unification in Las Vegas. Hearns halted Baez in round four, Leonard stopped Kalule with one second left in the ninth. Kalule fought hard in his American debut, while previews point to a showdown with Pipino Cuevas and a possible bid for Benitez or Hagler in future bouts. Other prelims included Ayala and McCrory posting knockouts and Mihara stopping Dionisio.
