Senate panel backs stronger cigarette warning label
The Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee approved a bill 15 to 1 to require explicit health warnings on cigarette packages and advertising. The label would read warnings about cancer, emphysema, heart disease, pregnancy risks, and addiction, replacing the current Surgeon General statement. The measure also mandates reporting cigarette additives to HHS for risk assessment and reauthorizes federal anti smoking information efforts. The bill now goes to the full Senate amid likely opposition from tobacco states. a House version is pending. Eagleton merged four labels into a single warning and endorsed the change.
