Early Odessa remembered
Glenda Spivey recounts Odessa memories through the eyes of longtime resident Mrs. Leamon Williams. She recalls 1927 arrival, crowded courthouse lawn, tiny rental rooms above a barber shop, 40 cent haircuts, 30 cent baths, cattle roaming downtown, and film memories at Rio and Lyric theatres as Odessa grew from sand and trees to a bustling city.

Quiet Place premieres as a distinct Bernstein work in Houston
The Houston Grand Opera opened Leonard Bernstein’s A Quiet Place at Jones Hall, pairing it with Trouble in Tahiti. Though long and uneven, the work captivates with originality and a modern American sensibility as it follows Sam, Dinah, and their children toward a elusive “quiet place” amid family strife. The reviewer notes strong writing by Stephen Wadsworth and virtuosic music, despite a slow funeral-parlor opening and missed opportunities in the poetry setting. Bernstein’s English-language setting stands apart, signaling a new direction in American opera.
