A church group of 18, including 14 children and four adults, was rescued when their paddle boat malfunctioned and list toward a dam on the Trinity River. Firefighters pulled them to safety as a crowd watched near University Avenue and I 30, about two miles west of downtown. All were unhurt.

New Gardendale–Odessa Route Opens With FM 554 Shortcut
The opening of FM 554 in Gardendale will cut the Gardendale to Odessa trip by eight to sixteen miles, boosting local traffic and allowing more oil field trucks through the area. Crews began work July 8, 1985, on the $1.2 million road, expected to carry about 1,000 vehicles daily at opening and over 4,000 by 2005.
