Japan redress unlikely soon says Japanese American leader

Ronald Ikejiri of the Japanese American Citizens League warns it will take years before Congress acts on a proposed $20 000 payment to about 60 000 people of Japanese ancestry detained during World War II. He notes public opinion favors compensation but cites competing interests amid opposition from McCloy who questions the commission findings and calls for investigation of the panel and its lobbying.

Government urged reparations for Japanese internment

The AP reports that a federal commission proposed 1.5 billion dollars in reparations to about 60,000 survivors of World War II internment camps. Some, like 76-year-old Harry Ueno of San Jose, favor an official apology over money, insisting the government admit fault and safeguard against repetition.

Klansmen arrested in death of Mobile teen

Federal charges filed against Henry Hays and James Knowles for civil rights violations in the 1981 beating death of 19 year old Michael Donald. Authorities say the lynching was racially motivated after a black man was not convicted of murdering a white police chaplain. Knowles pleaded guilty in a child-at-the-time crime under a plea bargain. Hays held on $1 million bond.
