Space Telescope Center Dedicated in Baltimore
The Space Telescope Science Institute, a $10 million facility guiding the Space Telescope, was dedicated in Baltimore as scientists and officials hailed a new era in astronomy. The telescope to be launched by the space shuttle in 1986 will observe above Earth's atmosphere, 350 miles up, seeing 50 times fainter and seven times farther than ground telescopes, with Barnard's Star named as a possible nearby planet target.
