Nine Dead After Oregon Charter Boat Capsizes

A 32 foot charter boat with 19 aboard capsized near Tillamook Bay in central Oregon after a large wave. Coast Guard crews searched the jetty mouth as two people remained missing, eight survivors treated for hypothermia, and a wreckage washed ashore near Barview State Park. AMA to Address Falling Membership at Annual Meeting

The American Medical Association opens a six day meeting in Chicago amid turmoil in U S medicine and efforts to hold onto members and influence. Data show membership fell to 260 455 in December 2002, the third straight year of profits despite dues decline, as competing groups attract specialists and critics call the AMA a trade group focused on finances.

Reagan Peak Named In White Mountains Of New Hampshire

A 5 553 foot peak in the White Mountain Range is being renamed for Ronald Reagan reversing the former Henry Clay designation. The Appalachian Mountain Club notes the summit is not a distinct peak while neighboring summits honor Washington Jefferson Adams Madison Monroe Pierce and Eisenhower. Local supporters argue the change honors a living president while opponents say it’s premature and federal renomaming rules require five years after death before action. The state legislature voted to proceed locally despite federal policy. The US Board of Geographic Names will not review the renaming until Reagan has been dead five years.
