Odessa American wins first place for recycling program

The Odessa American wins first place in the 1991 92 Keep Texas Beautiful Media Awards for its recycling efforts. Cathy Herzog of Litterbusters of Odessa nominated the paper for promoting and practicing recycling. The paper has recycled more than 250 tons of newsprint since 1991 and keeps waste out of landfills.

Organ donors give life to others Heather Connally’s death spurred acts

Heather Connally, a six year old killed in a 1990 accident on Eisenhower Road, inspired her family to donate organs including kidneys, heart valves, bone marrow and corneas. Her parents Cathy and Jesse recall painful memories yet find comfort in nine lives aided, with about eight or nine recipients benefitting.
