Carter gains support for trade sanctions stance on Zimbabwe Rhodesia
President Carter strengthens his position on Zimbabwe Rhodesia sanctions as Senate votes 52 to 41 to kill an effort to extend the embargo. White House lobbyists say support has more than doubled since the earlier 75-19 push to lift sanctions, with grounds to veto any move to end the restrictions. Secretary Vance warned lifting now would erode U.S. influence in Africa and prompt potential oil and economic reprisals. Senate debate continues amid House and conference committee tests on the Byrd amendment.
