McNally notes medieval practice of passing estates to the eldest son excludes illegitimate children from shares. He cites a historical rule once used to prevent property from leaving the family, acknowledging it does not fit modern suburbs. Reed, born November 1, 1958, had a mother who wed Ricker in Juarez a year earlier and lived with him in Big Spring while Ricker remained married to another woman.

Reed’s inheritance challenged by 1977 ruling on illegitimate children
After Reed’s mother’s marriage, Reed was adopted by her husband. Ricker, son of a Big Lake oilman, died in 1976 without a will. Texas denied illegitimate children inheritance unless parents married. The 1977 Supreme Court ruling struck down that law. Reed’s claim arose after the decision. Texas courts noted estate administration was underway.
