Genetic signature of aging found in human brain
Researchers from The Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School studied 30 brains aged 26 to 106, examining about 11 000 genes. After age 40 roughly 400 genes shifted activity, many damaged, some involved in learning and cell communication. Findings suggest aging-related brain change but do not prove causation.

Van rollover kills two migrant workers in Florida
A crowded van carrying 11 people, bound for North Carolina, rolled over on a highway in Port St. Lucie injuring two others and killing two migrant workers believed to be from Guatemala. The driver overcorrected and the vehicle ended up on its roof. none of the passengers had driver licenses and few had identification.

Man sentenced for smuggling cigars in Chicago
US District Judge Ronald A. Guzman sentenced Richard Mick Connors a former public defender to more than three years in federal prison for smuggling thousands of Cuban cigars into the United States and profiting from sales. Witnesses testified he traveled to Cuba via Canada and Mexico in the 1990s, buying cigars for 25 to 60 dollars a box and selling them for up to 400 dollars. He was arrested at the Canadian border in 1996 with 1,150 cigars.

Oregon court upholds 80 million Philip Morris ruling
The Oregon Court of Appeals reaffirmed an $80 million punitive verdict against Philip Morris in the case of Jesse Williams, a janitor who died of lung cancer. Williams smoked Marlboros since the 1950s. he died in 1997 at age 67. The Supreme Court ordered reevaluation under new standards.
