Australian ends swim to Florida

Australian distance swimmer Susie Maroney was pulled from the water about 10 miles off the Florida Keys after a brutal night in a shark cage. She had reached U.S. waters en route from Havana to Key West but became dehydrated and disoriented amid a sudden storm. Her mother Pauline reported she was severely dehydrated and vomiting, while swim coordinator Hugh Rule noted the hostile conditions and heavy seas. Maroney had completed more than nine tenths of the Straits journey, a feat unmatched in the Straits by swimmers in over 50 attempts recognized by the Swimming Hall of Fame.
