Senators Say No to Nuclear Freeze
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee rejected a proposed Soviet American nuclear weapons freeze in a first test vote. Leaders of the freeze campaign plan to push a vote in both houses to force members onto record. The committee split 10-6 along party lines on the Kennedy Hatfield amendment and 12-4 for Percy language. A separate incident reports tear gas at Sprague High School in Salem Oregon, injuring students and staff and prompting evacuations.
