Court Upholds Ward Verdict
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin on Wednesday upheld a two year jail term for A. M. Vernon Ward County justice of the peace. The court rejected Vernon’s claim that bookkeeping mistakes caused a 1958 shortage of court fines and costs. The ruling follows a Oct 16 1959 conviction by a 143rd District Court jury for misapplication of 20.50 of county funds from a speeding case. The county and district attorneys were authorized to sue Vernon’s sureties if restitution is not made within days. Vernon had been free on appeal bond since conviction.
