Stock Fraud Case Heads To Jury In Dallas
In Dallas AP report the fraud case of former Denton state senator Robert L. Proffer and Fort Worth attorney Hillis L. Adkison goes to the jury on 23 counts of mail and stock fraud tied to the Teachers Professional Investment Co. and allied Business Professional University. Proffer, a NTSC former professor, faced criticism from U.S. Atty. West who called the operation a major swindle and noted profits would have risen if the roof hadn’t fallen. Defense argued Proffer was a pawn amid slick operators. Four others pleaded bail. West cited Proffer’s 20 percent stock stake and over $6,500 gained while owning little stock. McAllister of NTSC testified Proffer was trusted by teachers yet warned against buying, labeling him the county’s only senator to return broker than when he left.
