Justice Dept Not Following Oil Orders Budget Fails Inquiry
Washington June 8 UPI The Justice Department is not reporting annually on whether the interstate oil compact commission’s conservation actions unduly influence competition in oil. Lack of funds and Brownell’s opposition halted the study. Congress showed no urgency to press the issue. The oil commission, in 27 states, has faced monopoly charges as Utah joins at Yellowstone. The planned report for Sept 1 may be the last due to budget and manpower limits.

Harris Calls Gas Bill Meet
Washington June 5 Chairman Oren Harris of the House Commerce Committee announced a special press conference for Sunday amid reports that President Eisenhower might drop his demand for amendments to the pending natural gas bill. The measure would ease federal price control on independent natural gas producers and respond to Eisenhower’s insistence on changes to base rates and Federal Power Commission review of escalator pricing. Harris declined to discuss the conference topic or any possible amendments, saying he would issue a statement at the press event.
