Dulles' plane forced down near Washington after engine fail
Secretary of state John Foster Dulles rode a Navy twin engine to Washington from New Vern when one engine failed and smoke trailed the aircraft. He landed safely at Anacostia Naval Air Station, joked he almost outfoxed reporters, and noted he was busy with disarmament papers. Pilot Cmdr Walter McGuire said one engine kept the craft aloft and the field was in sight. The oil seal failure in the engine caused the smoke.
