Mad magazine publisher Gaines dies at 70 in New York
Wil Gaines, longtime Mad magazine publisher and humorist, died in his sleep in Manhattan at age 70. Co editors Ian Ficarra and Nick Meglin praised his love of clever insult and hands-on business approach, noting his eccentric yet generous influence on the magazine's culture and stunts that included trips to Haiti and attempts to smuggle Mad into the Soviet Union.
