Americans picked the young Elvis Presley portrait for a 29-cent first class stamp in a nationwide vote, conducted by mail April 6-24. The younger image garnered 851,200 votes, three times as many as the older version, with comments from fans noting the historic first time the Postal Service used a public vote to select artwork.
Lucille Ball leads a national survey on women entertainers deserving a postage stamp. Among 1,000 respondents last month, Ball attracted 45 percent, with Judy Garland at 14 percent, Marilyn Monroe 13 percent, Barbra Streisand 9 percent, Cher and Madonna 2 percent each, and 3 percent other selections. 12 percent of respondents were unsure or did not answer.
President Bush refused to criticize Ross Perot during a prime time news conference, declining to say if he would debate Perot after the nominating conventions. He avoided comment on Perot's polls or Vietnam prisoner issues, hinting Perot might face press scrutiny. He aimed to project leadership with policy talk on a balanced budget, crime, education, and economic plans.
U S would sign the biodiversity treaty with small changes, says William K. Reilly, chief U S delegate, at Rio. He notes no sign before Earth Summit ends and cautions against reopening the pact. Reilly also says the Forest Service will end clear cutting as standard policy in national forests.
The United States rejected European demands to limit carbon dioxide emissions to 1990 levels by 2000 during the Earth Summit talks. Delegates from the EU pressed for stronger climate commitments as part of the treaty negotiations.

Washington researchers say smoke from burning forests and grasslands acts as a cooling parasol, slowing predicted global warming by potentially decades. The study notes the effect masks the greenhouse effect but won’t stop eventual temperature rises from carbon dioxide emissions.
A major study says the so called lost generation of baby boomers who left mainline Protestant churches in the 1970s and 80s are not returning, and their children show less church involvement. West Texas churches report the opposite, with Pastor Will Cotton of As United Methodist Church noting baby boomers are actually changing church engagement.
