Shell Oil Co announces completion of the two mile offshore extension to the Ellenburg area Brown-Bassett field with gas flow at 19,800,000 cu ft daily from 13,718 to 14,880 ft. Also notes No. 124 C. D. Johns will drill an offset well to El Cinco Production No. 2 C. D. Gas Proration Formula Invalid Rehearing Denied by Court

The Texas Supreme Court reaffirmed the invalidity of the Railroad Commission gas proration formula based on acreage and wells. A rehearing motion in Atlantic Refining Co. v. commission was denied. Justice Clyde Smith and Justice Meade Griffin dissented. The decision reversed a prior ruling upholding a Norman Campo order prorating gas land condensate from Normanna Field. The one third two thirds formula drew challenges that a 0.3 acre tract could produce far more gas per well than a 320 acre tract, prompting the court to call for a new method. The Office of the Attorney General supported rehearing. Smith argued no compulsory unitization exists in Texas and emphasized an owner’s right to drill on his tract.
