Lesser prairie chicken removed from protection list
The United States Fish and Wildlife Service said it formally removed the lesser prairie chicken from the Endangered Species Act protection after recent Texas court rulings. Officials stress this does not reflect a final judgment on biology and a thorough re evaluation of the bird status is underway using best available science. The move follows opposition from oil and gas groups and concerns over impacts on Permian Basin operations in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Colorado where the species' habitat has shrunk dramatically and private lands dominate.
