Acyclovir shows promise in first human herpes trial
In a Hopkins study led by Dr Rein Saral and published in NEJM, acyclovir given intravenously to 10 bone marrow transplant patients prevented cold sores and genital herpes, while 10 controls on placebo developed lesions. The drug targets herpes simplex infections and may aid otherwise healthy patients with hard to treat herpes-related illnesses.
