North Korea fires long range missile in defiant test
North Korea launched a long range missile possibly capable of reaching the United States, but it exploded seconds after liftoff. Five smaller missiles were also tested in a provocative exercise. All missiles fell into the Sea of Japan. U S Secretary Hadley called the tests provocative but offered no military response. The U N Security Council planned an emergency meeting and Japan promised sanctions.
