Small Nebraska School Clings To Life Amid Rural Decline
Pony Lake School in Bassett Nebraska, with just five students across two classrooms, faces closure as rural population drops strain funding and governance. Nebraskas Legislature debated dissolving elementary only districts, sparking court challenges and a potential return to merger with K twelve districts. Despite high per pupil costs and declining Rock County population, district leaders say they will keep the two surviving students in class as long as possible.
