Senate hearing witness John Ashcroft, President-elect Bush's pick for attorney general, pledged he would not pursue overturning Roe v. Wade before the Supreme Court. He defended gun regulations as constitutional, faced liberal opposition, and noted his past conservative rhetoric. The nomination is expected to win Senate approval amid protests from civil rights and women's groups. The two men once shared an office in Missouri.
