Lindh in Yemen Culture Clash Foreshadows Path to Taliban
Jens Lindh, a 17 year old American convert in Yemen in 1998, drew crowds with alms, wore traditional garb, and clashed over women and Shiite verses as he sought strict Salafi lessons. He later left due to class friction, overstayed a visa, and returned to fight with the Taliban in Afghanistan before being detained by U.S. forces.
