Carter backs 22 percent raise for top federal officials
President Carter proposed a 22 percent pay hike for Congress Cabinet members and top White House aides affecting about 40 000 people. Cabinet salaries would rise to about 840 000 and congressional pay to around 740 000, with pension links lifting his own and those of Ford and Nixon. The proposal, welcomed by Reagan aides, follows a four year pay freeze and challenges from critics including Ralph Nader who warns of elitism.
