Fire crews quell blaze on vessel at port entrance
Sailors battled a fierce fire aboard the Violetta at the port entrance as flames melted paint from the hull. Most flames are out with hot spots, but the Coast Guard will assess damage and investigate causes. The ship carried about 165,000 gallons of fuel oil but showed no water ingress or fuel leaks. Water ballast could not be pumped in due to weight instability, so fires burned through the night into Tuesday.
