Church's Chicken and Chess Boost Fame for Owner George Church
George W. Bill Church of Church's Fried Chicken sponsors a chess tournament with a 50000 prize, attracting top grandmasters and broad media attention. He notes the international event fit the firm’s budget while highlighting the chess money as a joke by the world champion. Church says his San Antonio chain grew from a 1952 start to about 400 company stores and 60 franchises.
