Government to retool child labor crackdown next spring
Labor officials acknowledge missing abuses as eight underage field workers were found harvesting beans near Homestead Florida in November. Maria Echaveste says enforcement has been lax, noting past campaigns and a new initiative, Operation Salad Bowl, to inspect 50 farms with potential penalties often discounted from the maximum. The civil penalties average rises but remain far below the $10,000 cap, while repeat offenders risk criminal charges.
