Shah at Lackland amid hostage crisis fuels exile debate
Shah remains at Lackland Air Force Base under tight security as militant Iranian students hold 50 American embassy staff hostage. Armao says the shah will take a prominent role in addressing accusations after the crisis ends. Egypt offers asylum. US aid continues while no departure timetable is set. He is treated as outpatient at Wilford Hall Hospital, reading and walking in warm Texas weather. He has lost over 20 pounds, but prognosis is very good, though lymphatic cancer remains a risk. City officials refuse anti shah and counter protests to avoid violence endangering hostages.
