Judge Porter Runs Rural Court as Unconventional Law School
RIDGECREST California judge Charles Porter teaches law in a weekday courtroom on Wednesday nights with 13 students in a four year program. The class operates as an apprenticeship under a judge with a 100 percent bar pass rate, using standard casebooks and real cases to prepare students for the California Bar. Kinney, 36, is among the few who have passed the bar from this program and now serves as a Kern County deputy public defender in Bakersfield.
