Study finds produce affordable for daily f ruit and veg portions
A USDA study based on 1999 Nielsen data shows a person can meet the recommended three fruit and four vegetable servings daily for 64 cents, about 12 percent of a $5.50 daily food budget. It notes many fruits and vegetables cost under 50 cents per serving and fresh produce is often cheapest, with wide variations by item and income.
