The mayor’s letter requesting action over two days of picketing at the Hammermill Paper Company Plant in Erie was rejected. Demonstrators organized by Oberlin for Civil Rights helped drive arrests of 67 pickets, including about 35 college students, by Wednesday May 12.
The College moves to insert a non-discrimination clause in the King Building contract and requires Austin Company to extend it to all subcontracts. NAACP and Oberlin activists back the measure, while the College plans to pursue legal action if unions block integration efforts.
Levitt, among three Indiana University students linked to a controversial anti communist act, explains legal peril of restricting free speech. The case, if opened in US district court, could set broad political precedent. He tours the Midwest and South to explain student rights and the trial implications. Scarieton College hosts sympathetic students in support.
Cinema Arts Association completes Fantasticheria, its first film, for premiere at the hall end of May. The 60 minute satire on college life blends high and low comedy with student characters across diverse archetypes. Sales begin May 24 with about 200 seats left for the midnight premiere May 2 and May 30 31 showings at the hall.
Civil liberties are debated at an ACLU forum featuring Andra harennise Ski Schwartz, a law professor at the University of eso, who argues for broader student rights. The discussion covers free speech limits, Fourth Amendment protections, university disciplinary procedures, and comparisons with other campuses, noting historical cases and ongoing debates about academic freedom.
Council forms the Student Government News Service to promote awareness and discussions of college matters. The service will publish a quarterly bulletin with feature articles and summaries of student organizations and committees, print a yearly directory, coordinate alumni magazine contributions, and assist editors with student life articles. Ted Morgan led the motion and supports centralizing information.
