A packed faculty meeting defeated a campus ROTC unit by 63 to 59 after heated debate. The vote, taken by secret ballot, followed petitions for a student referendum and petitions signed by 821 supporters, with President Stevenson signaling the issue may be reconsidered later.
A late night Y Poll shows 58 percent oppose the proposed ROTC unit at Oberfin, with 24 percent in favor and 175 percent undecided due to a typo. Analysis by class, sex, and performance suggests upperclassmen and women lean more against the unit, while men show stronger opposition than women.
In a noon special session Monday at Oberlin College the Student Council spoke against inviting an ROTC unit. A formal statement to the Faculty Conference Committee argued the move lowers academic standards by substituting military credits for academic credits and curtails student time, conflicting with academic freedom.
The YM cabinet sent letters of protest to resident Stevenson this morning opposing a proposed ROTC unit. The YM cabinet, by phone, voted 89 to 3 against the plan. the YW cabinet was unanimously negative with one abstention. Proponents argued ROTC would affect academic standards and Christian education at Oberlin.
Signs urged a 4 30 protest against the ROTC proposal in front of the library but no demonstrators appeared at Noah Burton Cafeteria dorms. Librarians quieted curious students who lingered in the lobby seeking the demonstration.
About 821 Oberlin students signed petitions asking the General Faculty to hold a student referendum on establishing an Air Force ROTC unit. The Student-Faculty Conference Committee forwarded the petitions with no recommendations after receiving them from Nancy Sutton and fellow petitioners.
