The schedule lists a reception for the new representatives by the Board of Trustees in Shipherd Lounge after the Inn. It notes a general public welcome and notes a Chapel room event precedes or accompanies the gathering.
Wedding notices state Bobbie Leete tied to Karl Stang after an engagement announced last December. Leete, a Oberlin graduate and YWCA activist, pursued graduate Chinese studies at Yale, while Stang, a Yale Divinity student and former YMCA leader, planned joint Christian university work after their June wedding.
In Oberlin history a memorial arch recalls the Boxer Rebellion and a group of Oberlin cadets who died. The China Festival and annual Shansi events mark the year with services, commissions, and alumni gatherings.
Robert Friedrichs and Grace Whitstone of the class of 1946 will depart for Oberlin in China to teach under the Oberlin Shansi Fellowship for three years. The pair, joined by Janet Knapp and others, will resume prewar duties and adjust the school to postwar conditions amid a 1300 mile trek back to the former campus once Shansi stability returns.
Grace Whitstone, newly chosen representative, says travel appeals to her after life in Youngstown. She plans to study Kindergarten-Primary and has taught in Youngstown. She chaired YWCA Phillis Wheatley and Nursery and Children's Home committees.
Plans for a new Far Eastern Studies department are underway as a composite major. Dean Wittke said progress is not yet sufficient for publication and that curriculum details require approval from the curriculum committee and faculty before offering courses drawing from history geography religion and related departments.
Two members of the fresh class will be elected at the time of the Student Council elections. The process aims to fill vacancies and involve current students in governance.
By Bob Porter the three annual fellowship winners Janet Grace and Bob Porter depart for three years in the Orient to gain experience and friendships through teaching English. Porter recalls the journey as highly instructive and plans to return with confidence in future endeavors. Porter left Oberlin in January 1941 for Shansi and later entered the Army.
