Kunen Maps Frustrations On White Radicalism Debate

James Kunen, Columbia senior and author of The Strawberry Statement, led a discussion on white student radicalism. He argued revolution as a risk that unleashes human potential, urged introspection, and critiqued groups like SDS and RYM for racism and ineffectiveness. He proposed nonviolent, workable options and even a collective college withdrawal as a provocative tactic.

Three Prefs Explain Dean Reich Answers

Student interest over the dismissal of Willa McNaughton as assistant professor of Chinese took precedence over concern about the departure of certain faculty members at a meeting called by Dean Donald Reich Wednesday night to discuss the resignations. Three departing professors Wu tun Capitan of philosophy Donald Swearer of relieving and Bruce Bennett of English explained their reasons for leaving and assured the crowd of 250 students and faculty that their decisions had nothing to do with the quality of the College. Dean Reich cited statistics showing turnover as part of a secular trend and the increased sense of professional commitment rather than institutional concerns. He noted that a high resignation rate might indicate the utility of the faculty and whether others were interested in raising it. Frustration over understanding McNaughton’s dismissal and desire for information, which Reich said could not be divulged, appeared in questions. The professors urged more student representation on faculty committees as a key point of discussion. Bennett said he was leaving after three years at Oberlin to devote himself to poetry. Capitan described pursuing a director position at a college in Michigan as a rare opportunity. Swearer framed his departure as a move toward more active research, balancing university and Oberlin contexts. Reich suggested EPPC as the most effective form of student participation in administration, noting broader standards for student influence.
