Friday Fanfare announces the season opening football game with participants including ceandge Smith Bettman and trainer Sutton Donadee Larson Burks Desing Haggard Speelman Walter Scarberry and Barrick leading lineup and preparations.
Obie campus buzzes as the Crimson and Gold prepare for the 1988 football season. The squad, in colors of red and white, trains hard amid student excitement and hopes for a strong start against Wabash. Fans anticipate a landmark kickoff and future Harmon of Horvath talk.
The morning before the big football game, freshmen endure Hell Day with flashy costumes and Rites. They will build the bonfire and later take a tie run, while two planners vanished until Thursday claiming they “lost their way.”
The college announced Labor Day as a holiday for all students after Commander Ralph J Horner was informed by the Navy Department that Labor Day should be observed as a holiday for Unit men. Saturday and Tuesday will be designated as no cut days with penalties for absences affecting graduation requirements.
The Social Committee plans a Rec Hall event Sunday evening featuring five newly issued records. Daphnis and Chloe and Porgy and Bess by major symphonies, Mozart Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Beethoven Fifth, and Strauss Waltzes will be played by noted orchestras under conductors Toscanini Weingartner and others.
Butler praises team effort as the 1945 football season nears. Oberlin hosts Wabash in the opener with Butler optimistic about improved physical condition and speed. Freshman bonfire and pep rally set the mood for Tappan Square as Lysle Butler’s squad readies for the first game with a weighty line and sturdy backfield.
