The Home Guard altered its drill routine this week to aid the Liberty Loan drive and recruit volunteers. Parades in the First Ward drew strong enthusiasm as about seven to night recruits joined, despite a lack of musicians for the march.
John B R Flavell, a genial Republican candidate for sheriff, is described as popular and optimistic amid Democratic hopes. The piece contends Democratic leaders pin hopes on a strong year and foresee a November outcome that may hinge on candidate viability.
Readiness for a broad National Security League effort grows in New Jersey as planners announce extended campaigns and a series of meetings begins with a Ridgefield gathering on Sunday afternoon.
Under A C Mae Corkindale leadership the Vincent men form a Bible class meeting Sundays at 10 am in the church house. All men are welcome including those not currently involved in church activities.
The Nutley Battalion of Infantry under Captain J B Applegate will march Ward Two Tuesday evening October 28 at 8 30 P M. They will assemble at the Oval and proceed along Chestnut Street Hillside Avenue Vreeland Prospect cross tracks Nutley Franklin Avenue station Hillside Kingsland Franklin to Orab Itka. Enlistments will be received along the line of march for those who have not joined the battalion. A visit to Ward Three is planned for next week with details in the following issue.
Nutley residents fund the Red Cross chapter with local money. The Patriotic Fund agreed to support the chapter as needed, while supporters may donate directly. Yarn and materials are purchased by the chapter, with some from the Red Cross Supply Service, to meet demand and ensure work for Nutley women continues.
Men of St Marys KR C Church organized a multi interest club named the St Marys Club at a Monday meeting. William P Hurley was elected president and John P Watah secretary with other officers noted.
Nutley widens Second Liberty Loan push as donations near 250 000 with a goal of a half million, led by the Bank of Nutley which plans a 100 000 subscription. Volunteers from Home Guard Boy Scouts letter carriers and the Woman's Committee canvass the town to boost sales while residents swap old bonds for new four percent issues.
Nutley schoolchildren from kindergarten to third grade wrote compositions explaining why Liberty Bonds are good and how they aid President Wilson and Uncle Sam against the Kaiser's forces. William J. Berg earned a bronze medal for the top entry.
President Wilson calls the Boy Scouts of America to aid in selling the Second Liberty Bonds. Treasury supplies six and a half million circulars and blanks plus selling instructions. Nutley leadership maps troops for a canvass with a house-to-house plan. Scouts aim for subscriptions from every family to earn the War Service Emblem.
Mrs. Lee Cook Smith of Montclair will address mothers at the local W C T U next Friday afternoon at 3 oclock. The event will be held at St Paul’s Church.
The Newark Classis meeting at Franklin Reformed Church elected Rev Harold W. Schenck president, succeeding Rev J Garland Hamner Jr. The body urged churches to support enlisted members and families, promote juvenile welfare, and form a War Work Committee to coordinate aid.
Postmaster Frank C. Drake outlines the November 2 postage hike. First class letters rise by one cent unless delivered within the same period, with Newark area rates affecting Nutley and nearby towns. Post cards add one cent, three cent stamps offered for letters, and Christmas gift mail to soldiers must meet new inspection rules and deadlines.
George Moffitt of 44 Wayne place Nutley died in his bed from heart failure after a period of frailty. He woke his family around midnight then died around 4 am. He was born in Ireland and had lived in New York before moving to Nutley. Survived by his widow and two brothers Robert and Thomas Moffitt. Funeral Sunday at 3 pm at his home conducted by Rev Douglas Matthews with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
Katherine M. Crawford of 285 Ridge Street and Austin W. Thompson of 111 Montclair Avenue Newark were married on Wednesday in a formal ceremony.
Former Governor Fielder, now federal food administrator, refutes claims that the government will seize home canned supplies or homegrown foods in excess of a set quantity. He states the law gives no authority to take private food, and urges self reliance to aid allies.
The local Red Cross vice presidency is filled by the election of Mrs. D. Anthony Usina after Mrs. Goldthwaite Dorr resigns to spend the winter in Washington.
A chicken house behind a residence on Taft Street near Bloomfield Avenue and Centre Street was destroyed by a fire reported in the afternoon. No injuries noted and the cause is under investigation.
Nutley leaders urge residents to give full effort in meeting the second Liberty Loan quota. The message stresses collective duty and maximum effort to support the war bond drive.
